Nonprofit Executive Coaching Program
Executive Coaching offers unique opportunities for managers and executives to engage in a professionally tailored program designed to accelerate
their individual development. Partnering with Virginia Tech’s Nonprofit and Civil Society Program, Arlington County will offer nonprofit organizational
assessment and direct executive coaching which will provide breadth and depth to the program and, therefore, increase the capacity, capability, and
sustainability of the nonprofit sector in Arlington over time. There are seven (7) phases of this program.
- Selection: To assure a diversity of organizations participating, organizations will be chosen to participate in the year-long program in one of two ways:
- The first year, three (3) organizations will be selected from submitted applications through a competitive process administered by a Review Committee
consisting of 2 members from the NPCC, 1 from CPHD, 1 from AED, 1 from DHS and 1 from PRCR. For copy of application, click
here.
In order to be selected, the organization will be ranked by its clear and compelling need for capacity-building, its ability to implement changes that will
enhance the organization’s usefulness to the Arlington community, a significant clientele to be served, and proven history of serving the Arlington community.
- The first year, three (3) organizations will also be selected by Arlington’s Department of Community Planning, Housing and Development for participation
funded by CDBG. Organizations must be current CD subrecipients in order to be selected for CD support.
- Assessment: The six (6) selected organizations would first undergo a practical assessment of all aspects of the organization followed by interviews with the
nonprofit organizations’ Board and staff members to further understand the needs and nature of the organization and to identify the most likely areas for support.
The assessment team will prepare a technical assistance/coaching plan.
- Monitoring: The Virginia Tech Nonprofit and Civil Society team will build into the assessment plan a follow-up strategy with the organization beyond the
original assessment.
- Training: As a vital part of capacity-building, each organization will be able to have its staffs attend each of the five (5) core competency courses in
the Nonprofit Curriculum as well as be referred to other appropriate courses as needed.
- Coaching: Using the data collected in the assessment stage, the Virginia Tech Nonprofit and Civil Society Program team will assist board and staff to execute
the plan. The coach will help the organization continue its capacity building work and to stay focused.
- Measurement: Working from the analysis stage of the assessment, the team will design success measures for the recommendations being made. This provides
important feedback to the organization that can, in turn, be used to report to the board, to strengthen confidence of funding sources, and to make process
improvements beyond the original recommendations.
- Final Reporting: The report will be presented to the full board of the organization upon completion by the assessment team. A copy of the report will be
provided to Arlington County.
